Projecting the architecture of the city, the result of multiple actions, requires an operational taxonomy of functions: some may refer to the reactions architecture generates when it comes into contact with its environment; others, to the transformation it causes in matter; and still others, to our lived and committed involvement. Every architect wishes to be on both sides of a non-existent line—creating and, at the same time, living. And thus, we move from thought to action. From the perspective of our shared space, we wish to proclaim the fruitful convergence of artistic and architectural practice, and to define both in continuity as an accumulation of collective actions in a place.
Artists, architects, citizens—we are all interested in understanding the city as an accumulation of events and lived experiences, Common Actions that give meaning to public space, and from which all interested parties can learn strategies for reflection and action to transform and improve it.
This publication gathers the interventions and encounters from the first edition of the Common Actions course held at the Menéndez Pelayo International University, with the participation of authors, architects, artists, and writers of contemporary and urban sensitivity, who are highly relevant in academic, creative, and intellectual circles, reflecting on the relationships between art and architecture.
